Dr. Gottfried Hirnschall: “Our work is not done yet. Go and engage.”

Dr. Gottfried Hirnschall is the Director of the HIV/AIDS Department and the Global Hepatitis Programme of the World Health Organization (WHO). Also he is an advisory board member of Youth against AIDS. In the fight against HIV/AIDS, he is particularly counting on the help of young people from all over the world. Michel Sidibé: “Together we can finally end AIDS!”

Michel Sidibé is the executive director of UNAIDS. The Joint United Nations Program is working towards stopping new HIV infections and ensuring that everyone living with HIV has access to HIV treatment. We had the chance to talk to Michel during the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam. Here’s what he thinks about the possibilities the youth has to help ending AIDS.

More than a fourth does not use condoms regularly

The youth-led organization Youth against AIDS (YAA) worked with LOVOO to survey more than 6,100 adolescents in seven European countries. 26.7 % of respondents are at risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease during sex. With a smile on their faces many young people left the Vienna City Hall on Sunday evening. One day after the Life Ball, Youth Against AIDS organized the LIFE BALL NEXT GENERATION for the first time on June 11, together with LIFE +, specifically for 16- to 18-year-olds. This event was for teens who pre-occupied with sexual education and HIV / Aids, and thencelebrated  as a reward for one day with international DJs, stars and influencers. 800 pupils were already informed by the workshops in the run-up to the LIFE BALL NEXT GENERATION in Austria. Youth Against AIDS reaches the first students with workshops in Vienna

Already on 7th and 8th May, 60 young people from Vienna and the surrounding area were trained as so-called “peers” by the education experts of Youth Against AIDS. As these the young people can independently give the enlightenment workshops in school classes.
