Michel Sidibé is the executive director of UNAIDS. The Joint United Nations Program is working towards stopping new HIV infections and ensuring that everyone living with HIV has access to HIV treatment. We had the chance to talk to Michel during the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam. Here’s what he thinks about the possibilities the youth has to help ending AIDS.
Michel, what is UNAIDS doing to involve the youth in the fight against AIDS?
We are working very hard to build a partnership with young people and people who are HIV positive. Because this collaboration could take us to a whole new level. That’s why we’ve contacted your Head Quarter to work together and to create a new movement that helps us look at sexuality from a different angle. In this way, we can design sexual enlightenment so that it really reaches everyone.
How can the youth help to stop AIDS worldwide?
The youth can help us accelerate the pace of action by providing information, networking and courage. Nearly 40 percent of the HIV infections are still found among young people today. In my continent Africa, about 83 percent of the population is under 35 years old. So if you miss out on getting young people to act actively and just think they’re just waiting for you to get your project done, we won’t be able to end HIV and AIDS. That’s why I think that UNAIDS can’t achieve this goal without young people.
If you had the opportunity to talk to every young person in the world, what would you say?
I would simply say that you are the generation that can really end AIDS. Because when you talk to our generation, you will find that it is actually possible. Together we can do it.
